The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) recently published the results from their 2013 Cosmetic Dentistry Industry Survey. The numbers indicated some important trends about the rising popularity of cosmetic dental treatments.
Cosmetic Dentistry Basics
Before we take a look at statistics, let’s define the types of treatments we’re talking about. Cosmetic dentistry refers to treatments aimed at creating positive change to a patient’s teeth and smile. Generally speaking, these include teeth whitening procedures, straightening, or replacing missing teeth.
Why Improve Your Smile?
Take a look at these AACD survey stats:
- 48% of survey respondents said a smile matters the most when making a first impression. 2nd place went to the first words a person says, which received 25%.
- 45% said a smile is the most attractive feature on a person regardless of age.
- 71% of people polled said people with a nice smile make friends more easily than people with flawed smiles.
The survey said 89% of the people who sought cosmetic dental treatments in 2013 did so to improve physical attractiveness and self-esteem. 54% sought them to address an accident or injury. A rising trend has been the demand of these treatments in anticipation of a major event, such as a wedding; in fact, 49% of those surveyed listed this as a reason they sought cosmetic treatments.
