Last week, we told you how visiting our office could help with some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions. But many people – especially those who spent money on dental treatments in 2014 – have resolved to focus on oral care this year. In this post, we’ll provide reminders on the best ways to maintain happy and healthy teeth for 2015 and beyond.

I Resolve to Prevent Cavities This Year

An excellent resolution. You’ll save money and feel healthier. To achieve this goal, be sure to:

  • Cut down on sugary foods and drinks
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Rinse after consuming highly acidic beverages (colas, tea, and coffee)
  • Brush twice a day
  • Floss at least once a day
  • Use a fluoride mouthwash often

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, almost half the adults in the U.S. suffer from some form of gum disease. Symptoms can include:

  • Bad breath that won’t go away
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Painful chewing
  • Loose teeth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Receding gums or longer appearing teeth

The good news is that improved oral hygiene can make a radical difference in the health of your gums. Here are some tips:

  • Quit smoking: Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors associated with the development of gum disease. Additionally, smoking can lower the chances for successful treatment.
  • Brush and floss to remove plaque: Ask us for help on your brushing and flossing technique. Many people make their gum condition worse by brushing with too much force or flossing in the wrong way.
  • Review your medical history: There are hundreds of prescription and over the counter medications that can reduce the flow of saliva, which has a protective effect on the mouth. Without enough saliva, the mouth is vulnerable to infections such as gum disease.
